The Concept of Backlinking

I find this subject to be very interesting and intriguing. There are so many theories out there, and many permutations and combinations. One way links, reciprocal/two way links, three way links, penta links, and the list goes on.

Once google used to face a very grave problem and it was nothing other than spider traps. Do you recognize those links pointing to your own home page at the footer of your web pages? Imagine a robot with no AI, who is supposed to follow each and every link that it sees. And in this case, the robot can go on following your link at the footer for an unlimited period of time, and this used to result in server crash and huge bandwidth allocations.

Google has found a way to overcome such links and to avoid spider traps. For a search engine crawler to find ways of avoiding trouble, will it seem such a difficult task to find reciprocal, three way, and sponsored/paid links?

My point is, during the initial days, we (and yes, that includes me) used to do reciprocal linking with sites in our niche. But today, this holds no value at all, and I am rather surprised to find that several SEO’s still utilize this strategy. Google needs authority links as pointed out in their webmaster guidelines. Organic links that are built to give rich information relevant to a user query.

One major way to get links is to write good content, manage good content, and promote good content. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that good content is loved by everybody.

Google, Google, and more Google. Why do you often hear about this simple, yet sophisticated search engine all the time? Why do search engine marketing experts spend months on a trot to find a way that can be used to gain an advantage over their competition?

As it stands, Google is the ultimate supreme search engine when the market shares are considered. One time, Google was found to have almost 90% of the entire search market, close to what Microsoft had achieved with their operating system, the Windows. Who would forget the moment when our priviliged Bill Gates touched the centi-billion dollar mark to claim the spot as the world’s richest person ever! Well, that is a different story.

All the while, SEOs end up chasing the small fish to find a bigger one. True, during the process, they do get performance enhancers for their websites. As the old saying goes, performance enhancers are small term investments, or in other words, you need to sustain doing what you have been doing over a long time. Is it then in any way a surprise to see most SEO’s and web marketing specialists charging $100-$1000 per hour for their SEO services? In my view, let me say that it is a hell lot of money!

For me, authority and authorization is to be the word to move forward. It is no use trying to invest in someone for over 100 bucks an hour and have them work 10 hours a day for the most part of a month. Yes, maybe, you will see a tremendous increase in traffic, but one thing you have to remember is, volatile results live for short term. Why is it that wikipedia shows up on page 1 of Google most of the time if you are looking up for definitions and information on most industry related keywords? Me and my associates were discussing about the probability of Wikipedia starting up a web based business platform (an e-commerce website) within its domain using the keywords that they are ranked on top on Google. Rest assured, they are bound to become billionaires overnight, no sweat! But at that rate, they can become trillionaires in a month, right?

Wrong! This is where authorization comes into play. Wikipedia is an authorized encyclopedia available online-and this is what the common man understands. If they decide to convert it into an e-commerce website, there is no doubt that Google will push them way down the SERP’s, and Google is fair in doing this. They have authorized wikipedia as an information website, not a website where commodities can be auctioned away. If I am not mistaken, they have ebay in place for that stuff, right?
